Strategos v1898 - early access

Strategos is a deep historical wargame that lets you simulate large-scale battles from the ancient Mediterranean with impressive scope. The game places thousands of soldiers on the field and aims to recreate both real and speculative clashes between the great powers of antiquity. If you enjoy tactical warfare rooted in history, this one clearly has ambition.
What stands out most is the scale and complexity. Strategos isn’t a simple troop-massing game; it models formation movement, disorder, morale shocks, flanking, fog of war, terrain effects, and the messy reality of units charging, pursuing, evading, or routing. That gives the battles a strong tabletop-wargame feel, but in real time. It looks like a game for players who want to think like commanders rather than just click on enemies.
The command and control system is another interesting layer. Generals are not just combat units, but important parts of the chain of command. Deciding when to keep them back, when to use them for morale support, and when to risk them in direct fighting adds a lot of tension. That kind of design can make victories feel earned, but it also means the learning curve is probably steep.
Content-wise, Strategos is packed. There are over 250 unique units and nearly 120 factions, covering everything from Achaemenid Persia and Rome to Carthage, Greek city-states, Germanic tribes, Iberians, Thracians, and many more. The historical range is especially appealing, spanning nearly a thousand years of classical antiquity. The included battles such as Issos, Trebia, Zama, Carrhae, and Raphia, plus campaigns like Alexander, Hannibal, and the Wars of the Diadochi, give the game a lot of replay value for history fans.
The customization options also seem very flexible. You can adjust army lists, allies, unit types, army size, era, map, deployment distance, AI behavior, and even randomize armies with filters. That makes it easy to create both historical reenactments and "what if" scenarios, which is a big strength for a sandbox-style wargame.
Overall, Strategos looks like a serious and content-rich strategy game for players who love ancient warfare, detailed mechanics, and historical authenticity. It may not be the most accessible entry point for newcomers, but for fans of hardcore tactical wargames, it offers a lot to dig into.
