The game utilizes an upgraded engine from the developers' previous hex-based WWII strategy games, offering a challenging experience for commanders on both sides of the conflict. Players can explore historical scenarios such as the German invasion of France, naval blockades, and the Russian Revolution. The flagship campaign features major powers like France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, the UK, and the USA against Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, with other nations potentially joining the fray.

Strategic Command: World War I introduces new unit types, including ANZACs, Colonial Corps, and Mountain Corps. Units can move, entrench, and improve trenches through Trench Warfare research. Naval mines can be deployed to protect sea lanes or disrupt enemy shipping, and reconnaissance bombers play a crucial role in artillery spotting.

The game offers five campaigns: 1914 Call to Arms, 1914 Triple Alliance, 1914 March on Paris, 1917 Fate of Nations, and 1918 Ludendorff Offensive. Players can set friendly major powers to be AI-controlled and switch sides during gameplay. The game supports multiplayer via a PBEM++ server, with a Challenge Lobby for seamless turn exchanges.
