Desolate throws you into the role of a Volunteer sent by the shadowy “New Light” corporation to Granichny Island, the site of a massive mysterious calamity that happened two years ago. Your task is to investigate lingering paranormal phenomena, recover information about what really went wrong, and try to set things right—if you survive long enough. Granichny is a hostile place, populated by mutated creatures, deranged survivors, bizarre weather events and twisted anomalies that will test every skill you have.

As you explore abandoned towns, ruined military installations and secret laboratories, you’ll piece together the island’s dark history through hidden documents, diaries and environmental clues. Combat can be brutal: you’ll face off against monsters, bandits and rogue soldiers in open firefights or slip into the shadows to take out enemies quietly. Studying the creatures you encounter not only reveals more about their origins, it also grants you tactical advantages when you go head-to-head with them.

Whether you tackle the island solo or team up with up to three other Volunteers, Desolate encourages cooperation. You can revive fallen teammates, share resources and combine unique skills to overcome the most dangerous encounters. As you progress, you’ll unlock and train new abilities, craft and upgrade weapons and gear, and customize your character’s appearance with scavenged clothing and armor. Don’t forget your mind as well as your body: the island’s eerie atmosphere can warp reality and threaten your sanity, changing how you see the world around you.
