Banished is a town-building strategy game that puts you in charge of a group of exiles determined to carve out a new life in an unfamiliar territory. Armed only with the clothes on their backs and a modest supply of goods in their cart, these settlers become the lifeblood of your budding community. Each villager is more than just a worker: they’re born, age, take on jobs, raise families and eventually pass away, so you must keep them healthy, fed and content if your settlement is to thrive and grow.

Rather than unlocking buildings through tech trees or handling any form of currency, every structure is available as soon as you’ve gathered the raw materials needed to erect it. Trade ships occasionally arrive to swap your resources for seeds, livestock or specialized tools, but they may also carry unfamiliar diseases. Villagers can fill twenty distinct roles—from farming, hunting and fishing to blacksmithing, teaching and healing—and no single approach guarantees success. Each map offers different resource distributions, forcing you to decide when and where to clear forests, dig mines or quarry stone. Ultimately, maintaining a delicate balance between expansion, resource stockpiles and the well-being of your townsfolk determines whether your settlement survives—or withers away.
