You start with a stack of procedurally generated tiles, drawing and placing them one by one to form groups and combinations of landscapes like forests, villages, or water bodies. Points are awarded based on how well the tiles fit. Some tiles feature special objects that present quests, such as connecting a locomotive to 10 tracks or surrounding a windmill with grain fields. Completing these quests grants more tiles to continue expanding your landscape. The game ends when the tile stack is depleted.

As you expand, you can discover new biomes and pre-placed game objects that offer long-term tasks, unlocking new tiles, biomes, and quests. Dorfromantik features endless and beautiful landscapes, a unique mix of strategy and puzzle mechanics, and a relaxing gameplay experience with high replay value. It offers many unlockable tiles and biomes, and an original art style with a hand-painted board game feel.

The game does not include 4X strategy, trading, resource management, combat, violence, or multiplayer. Dorfromantik offers various modes to suit different play styles, including quick mode, hard mode, custom mode, monthly challenges, and a creative mode for limitless building.
