The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon follows a tense turning point for the Zemurian continent as its foretold end approaches, just as humanity prepares to make its first journey into space. When Marduk suddenly invites Van Arkride, Rean Schwarzer, and Father Kevin Graham to take part in a cutting-edge training mission, they are drawn toward the hidden truths at the heart of Zemuria. Although each of their journeys takes a different direction, they all lead to the same mystery: what exists beyond the edge of the horizon?

The game takes players across the Calvard Republic, where they can explore rich locations, build relationships with allies, and experience three connected storylines that gradually reveal the bigger picture. It also expands the combat system introduced in Trails through Daybreak, offering more tactical choices through both fast-paced Field Battles and strategic Command Battles.

New mechanics add even more depth to combat. Shard Commands and S-Boosts give characters and holo cores unique advantages, letting players strengthen their party in different ways. Some characters, including Van in his Grendel form, can also use Awakening during Field Battles to temporarily become much stronger. In addition, Z.O.C. can slow enemies down dramatically, making it easier to unleash multiple attacks and break through tough defenses. Players can also recruit allies from across Calvard and beyond to challenge the Grim Garten, a custom-party dungeon built around stopping Ouroboros’ plans.
