Lithium is a compact, thought-provoking ecogame that puts players in the political and moral tension around a planned lithium mine in Cínovec, Czechia. You choose to act as one of three social groups-Activists, Locals, or the City-each with distinct actions and tools. Your goals are not simply to defeat an opponent but to pause or redirect the developer’s plans and spark a public debate about a just and environmentally sound solution.

Gameplay centers on social strategy and negotiation: will you stall the mining project so the developer cannot finish, or will you reach out to the other groups and organize a deliberative forum to build collective action? Success depends on cooperation across groups to gain broader societal support. Every decision can provoke unexpected reactions, so choices must balance local concerns, the global economy, the climate crisis, nature protection, and the demands of a just energy transition.

Developed by the Blue Pulsar collective for the Symptoms of the Future exhibition at Hraničář Gallery (September 2024-February 2025), Lithium frames a real-world issue as an interactive investigation rather than a conventional win/lose contest. The result is a reflective experience that rewards careful planning, empathy, and an appreciation for complexity rather than forceful confrontation.

Lithium will appeal to players interested in environmental politics, deliberative democracy, and games that explore civic and ethical dilemmas. It’s especially strong as an educational or discussion tool-short sessions can lead to different outcomes depending on alliances and strategies, giving the game replay value and room for critical conversation.
