SGS Imjin War is a deep, historically themed strategy wargame that reenacts the Imjin War (1592-1598), when Japanese forces invaded the Joseon kingdom of Korea. Gameplay and setting
- One player commands Hideyoshi’s samurai-led Japanese invasion force; the other manages Joseon Korean defenders aided by Ming Chinese reinforcements. Depending on events and card play, either side may also influence or control Manchu Jurchen land units.
- The grand campaign runs from May 1592 to April 1594 (one turn = one week). Several shorter scenarios cover portions of the 1592-1593 fighting and the 1598 second invasion.
- The map covers the Korean peninsula’s seven main historical provinces, with off-map boxes for nearby areas in Manchuria, China and Japan, plus many sea zones used for maneuver and trade.

Combat, units and systems
- Unit scale is regiments (land) and squadrons of 1-6 units for ships. Both sides field thousands of land troops, hundreds of warships (including the famous Turtle ships), irregular forces, rebels and raiders.
- Combat systems are detailed and period-specific: naval rounds model broadsides and boarding actions; land combat considers arquebus and cannon firepower, samurai close-combat skill, horse-archer harassment and guerrilla actions; sieges and supply are critical.
- Logistics and control of key towns and supply lines are decisive factors in success or failure.

Cards, events and replayability
- The game includes hundreds of event cards affecting weather, income, population loyalty, diplomacy, combat and sieges. These cards create a wide variety of situations and high replayability, making each playthrough different.
- Victory conditions are historical and campaign-oriented: Japan wins by conquering all of Korea and capturing Chinese provinces (Liaoning and Zhili); the Korean side wins by expelling the Japanese. If no decisive victory occurs, accumulated victory points determine the winner.
