Super Bit Blaster XL is a retro-inspired, fast-paced arcade shoot 'em up that pays homage to classic quarter-eating arcade games from the '80s. Originally born from a spontaneous idea in late 2015, its predecessor Bit Blaster XL changed its creator’s life so dramatically that it paved the way for becoming a full-time game developer. In this next evolution, designer Adam Nickerson has reworked nearly every aspect of the original, adding new modes like Co-Op and Vs, improved visuals, additional language translations, fun Easter eggs, and an optional control scheme that offers better responsiveness—even though it isn’t a twin-stick shooter.

In Super Bit Blaster XL, your ship never stops moving and is constantly firing. This means you'll need to master turning, boosting, and braking to avoid the ever-growing swarm of enemies and obstacles. The gameplay focuses on quick reflexes and strategic use of power-ups. Pick up a variety of weapon upgrades—such as Spread Shot, Heat Seekers, Laser, and Blast Shot—as well as bombs to clear the screen, shields, and boost pickups to help extend your survival and rack up high scores.

As you progress, you collect coins that allow you to unlock new ships, each with unique attributes like increased speed, faster shooting, or better shielding, giving you an edge on the leaderboards. The game also features endless survival gameplay in a classic bullet-hell style, where every session is a new challenge at reaching the highest score possible.

Additional features include support for keyboard and gamepad controls, Steam achievements, online leaderboards, and Steam Cloud saving. The retro pixel graphics and chip tune soundtrack crafted by Spiff Tune enhance the nostalgic yet fresh arcade experience. With gameplay influenced by iconic titles such as Luftrausers, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Defender, and Geometry Wars, Super Bit Blaster XL offers both a heartfelt tribute to classic shooters and a modern take that remains simple to learn while being engagingly hard to master.
