In Gloomhaven, players can explore the world alone or in online co-op with up to four players. The game features 17 unique characters, each with their own skills and over 1,000 different abilities to master. Before embarking on quests and events, players prepare their deck of ability cards, which are essential for engaging in tactical turn-based combat. Each turn requires strategic planning, as players select two cards for each mercenary, using the top half of one and the bottom half of another. The hex grid terrain offers opportunities to set up deadly combos and unleash devastating powers, but players must be cautious of the cost, as cards are a scarce resource.

As players progress, they can enhance their abilities with perks and new equipment, increasing their power with level-ups. The game features a branching campaign of 95 story missions, where players' greed is pitted against their morality. Powerful opponents vie for control over the city of Gloomhaven, and players must make difficult choices that will shape their path.

Additionally, the Guildmaster adventure, created in collaboration with the community during early access, offers more than 160 exclusive digital missions. This adventure introduces new storylines, quests, maps, and NPCs, allowing players to experience another facet of Gloomhaven. Players must choose the best combination of mercenaries for each fight and follow their character stories in this deadly new territory.
