In this game, you step into the shoes of Anataeus Vaya, a highly talented alchemist who has been appointed as the Head Alchemist for House Van Tassen, a prestigious and wealthy family. However, beneath the luxurious exterior of the family, there are hidden dangers that alchemy alone might not be able to resolve.

The game challenges you to master the complex machinery of the transmutation engine, a sophisticated tool used by alchemical engineers. You'll design and construct machines to perform alchemical processes, utilizing various components such as programmable arms and customizable tracks. The puzzles are open-ended, allowing you to compete with others to create the most efficient solutions. You can also share your designs as animated GIFs.

Opus Magnum features full integration with the Steam Workshop, enabling you to create and share your own puzzles. You can also play top-rated user-created puzzles curated by Zachtronics in the Journal of Alchemical Engineering. The game offers a rich narrative filled with intrigue and dark plots involving the city's ancient Houses, where alchemists are both highly valued and dangerous.

Additionally, the game includes a solitaire minigame called Sigmar’s Garden, which provides a relaxing break from the main challenges. Each game of solitaire is winnable, but not every attempt will be successful.
