RimWorld is a science fiction colony simulation game that revolves around an intelligent AI storyteller. Drawing inspiration from games and series like Dwarf Fortress, Firefly, and Dune, it begins with three survivors of a spaceship crash on a distant planet. Players are tasked with managing the moods, needs, injuries, illnesses, and addictions of their colonists. The game allows you to build in various environments such as forests, deserts, jungles, and tundras.
As you play, you'll witness colonists forming and breaking relationships with family, lovers, and spouses. You can replace injured limbs and organs with prosthetics, bionics, or biological parts harvested from others. The game involves combat against pirates, tribes, wild animals, giant insects, and ancient machines. You can craft structures, weapons, and clothing from a variety of materials, and tame and train animals ranging from pets to deadly beasts.
Trading with passing ships and caravans is possible, and you can form caravans to complete quests, trade, attack other factions, or relocate your entire colony. The game challenges you to survive harsh weather conditions, capture and recruit prisoners, and explore a new world each time you play. RimWorld is also highly moddable, with a vibrant community creating a wide array of mods.
The game is a story generator, designed to create dramatic and engaging narratives about survival, conflict, and relationships. The AI storyteller controls random events, shaping the story with different styles depending on the storyteller you choose, such as the unpredictable Randy Random or the relaxed Phoebe Chillax.
Your colonists are not professional settlers but rather crash-landed survivors with diverse backgrounds that affect their skills and behaviors. Each colonist has unique traits and relationships, influencing how they interact with others and respond to their environment. The game features a detailed health system, tracking injuries and conditions that impact colonists' abilities, and offers options for medical treatment and prosthetic enhancements.
