Dungeon Rats is a tactical RPG that plunges you into the harsh world of a prison ruled by gangs. As a new inmate at the bottom of the hierarchy, your primary goal is survival. You'll need to hone your combat skills, gather better weapons and equipment, and decide whether to recruit allies or go it alone as you fight your way to the top. The game offers a rich tactical combat system with a variety of attack options, including standard attacks, aimed attacks targeting specific body parts, and special attacks like Whirlwind and Impale.

The game features a detailed crafting and alchemy system, allowing you to forge your own weapons, brew potions and poisons, and experiment with substances like Liquid Fire and Black Powder. With eight weapon types to choose from—Daggers, Swords, Axes, Hammers, Spears, Bows, Crossbows, and Throwing Weapons—each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, adding depth to your combat strategy.

Dungeon Rats allows for a fully customizable main character and offers the possibility of recruiting up to 10 companions, not all of whom are human. However, your party size is limited to four members. The game challenges you with 50 intense battles and offers four different endings, ensuring a unique experience based on your choices.

Notable changes from its predecessor, The Age of Decadence, include a party-based system, which was highly requested by players. Strategic elements like flanking and positioning are crucial, and you can manually place your characters before a fight. Charisma plays a significant role in determining the number and quality of your party members. Skill points are distributed among party members, meaning a larger party results in fewer skill points per person and slower level progression. The game also introduces new weapons, armor, and creatures, along with three difficulty levels: Nice Guy, Tough Bastard, and Murderous Psychopath, catering to a range of player preferences.
